Teachable and Thinkific have been the default “first course platform” pair for a decade, and they’ve converged on similar feature lists — which makes choosing between them feel harder than it is. The real differences live in three places: transaction fees at the entry tier, checkout sophistication, and how much control you get over your site.
All prices below were checked against both companies’ current pricing in July 2026. One timing note if you’re deciding right now: Thinkific has announced a roughly 10% price increase on its Basic, Start and Grow plans taking effect for renewals on August 13, 2026 — the numbers below are the current published prices.

Pricing: the entry-tier fee is the real story
On paper the entry plans are $10 apart. In practice, Teachable’s Starter plan takes 7.5% of every sale on top of payment processing, while Thinkific Basic takes 0% if you use Thinkific Payments. Sell $2,000/month of courses and Teachable’s entry tier quietly costs $150/month more than its sticker price.
The fee disappears on Teachable’s Builder plan ($89/mo) — so the honest comparison is Teachable Builder vs Thinkific Basic/Start, at which point Teachable is the pricier option for solo creators early on.
At the upper end ($189 vs $199) the platforms are effectively price-matched, and the decision moves to features.
Course building and delivery
Both platforms handle the fundamentals — video hosting, drip schedules, quizzes, certificates, student progress — competently. The differences:
- Teachable is the more opinionated, simpler builder. You’ll launch faster; you’ll also hit its walls sooner if you want your school to look and behave exactly your way.
- Thinkific gives you more structural control: a more flexible site builder, more theme control, and an app store for extending functionality.
If “I want to upload lessons and sell this week” describes you, Teachable’s opinionation is a feature. If you’re building a branded academy you’ll grow for years, Thinkific’s flexibility pays off.
Checkout, payments and taxes
This is Teachable’s strongest card. Its checkout is genuinely good — one-click order bumps and upsells, and crucially it can handle sales tax and EU VAT collection and remittance for you in many cases, which is a real operational burden lifted for creators selling internationally.
Thinkific’s checkout is solid and improving (TCommerce added order bumps and similar conversion tools), but Teachable still has the edge on tax handling.
Community
Reversed picture: Thinkific’s Communities product is a first-class feature — spaces, posts, events, tied into your courses. Teachable’s community offering is comparatively thin, and most serious Teachable creators bolt on an external community.
Worth an honest aside: if community is the core of what you sell (not an add-on), neither platform is really built around it — that’s Skool’s territory (see our Skool vs Kajabi comparison), or a chat-native setup (below).
So which one?
Pick Teachable if:
- You want the fastest path from “I have videos” to “I have a paying student”
- You sell internationally and want tax handled for you
- You’ll be on Builder or above (avoid the Starter fee if you have real volume)
- You sell coaching or digital downloads alongside courses
Pick Thinkific if:
- You want 0% platform fees from day one at the lowest price
- Site control and branding flexibility matter to you
- Community is part of your offer but not the whole offer
- You’re building a multi-course academy for the long haul
The third option neither of them mentions
Both platforms share one assumption: your students will come to your website, log into a portal, and remember to keep coming back. That works for some audiences. It quietly fails for others — completion rates on portal-based courses are notoriously poor, because the course lives somewhere your students don’t.
If your audience lives in Telegram or Discord — common for trading, fitness, language, creator-economy and most non-US markets — look at platforms built to deliver lessons into the chat apps people already open daily, as well as on the web. That’s PaidTier’s model: a drag-and-drop course and funnel-page builder with Stripe checkout and abandoned-cart recovery in front, and automatic delivery and membership management across Telegram, Discord and a web portal behind. It starts at $0/month with a commission per sale, so the cost scales with revenue instead of preceding it — see pricing, or the full guide to selling courses on Telegram.
FAQ
Is Teachable or Thinkific cheaper? At the sticker price, Teachable ($39) beats Thinkific ($49) — but Teachable’s entry tier takes 7.5% of sales and Thinkific’s takes 0%. Past roughly $130/month in sales, Thinkific Basic is cheaper in practice. At mid and upper tiers they’re within $10 of each other.
Which is better for beginners? Teachable, narrowly — fewer decisions, faster launch. Thinkific’s learning curve is mild, though, and buys you more room later.
Do either have a free plan in 2026? No true free plan on either; both offer trials. If you want to start at $0, commission-based platforms like PaidTier (free plan, pay per sale) exist for exactly that.
Can I migrate between them later? Yes — both support content export/import well enough that migration is tedious but routine. Your real switching cost is rebuilding checkout pages and re-onboarding students, which is a reason to think about where your audience actually is before you build.
